Weekend Travel from Manila

One of the best parts of living in Manila is the possibility of taking short weekend trips. Even if Metro Manila can feel busy and crowded during the week, there are many nearby destinations where people can relax, eat well, and enjoy a different environment.

For many residents, weekend travel is not just a luxury. It is part of maintaining balance. The traffic, heat, and pressure of city life is very tiring. A short trip to Tagaytay, Baguio, Batangas, Subic, Clark, or Laguna can give a sense of refreshment without requiring a long vacation.

Tagaytay is one of the most popular weekend destinations from Manila. It is relatively close, cooler than the city, and known for views of Taal Lake. Many people go there for coffee, bulalo, restaurants, and overnight stays. It is a simple escape for people who want cooler air without traveling too far. Tagaytay can be reached less than 1.5 hours from BGC.

Baguio is another favorite destination, especially for those who want colder weather. The drive is longer, but many people enjoy Baguio because of its mountain climate, pine trees, cafes, markets, and relaxed atmosphere. For foreigners and Koreans who miss cooler weather, Baguio can feel very comfortable. With the NLEX and TPLEX, Bagio can be reached within 5 hours from BGC.

Batangas is good for beach trips, diving, and short resort stays. It is suitable for people who want the sea without flying to another island. Anilao is one of the best diving site in the world since this is located along the Verde Island Passage (VIP). VIP is considered one of the highest marine biodiversity in the world. Thus, Anilao is a diving haven but snorkeling alone provide wonderful experience.

Subic and Clark offer a different type of travel experience, with wider roads, family-friendly areas, hotels, shopping, and outdoor activities. There is a huge Korean town in Clark-Angeles area. Along the Phil-Am Friendship road, numerous Korean restaurants are in operation. Some restaurants are better than restaurants in Korea.

Food is also a major reason to travel in the Philippines. Each place has its own local specialties and atmosphere. Travel is not only about sightseeing; it is also about discovering restaurants, markets, cafes, seafood places, and local snacks.

However, weekend travel requires planning. Traffic can be heavy, especially during holidays, long weekends, and Sunday return trips. Leaving early in the morning can make the trip easier. It is also important to check weather conditions, road conditions, parking availability, and hotel reviews. I recommend not traveling during Holyweek. Once experienced, you will know why.

For people living in the Philippines long-term, I think weekend travel is one of the best ways to understand the country. Manila is only one part of the Philippines. To appreciate the country better, you need to see its mountains, beaches, small cities, local food, and regional culture.
