🌍🇵🇭 Iran Conflict Keeps Global Energy Risks High, With Philippines Exposed

The conflict involving Iran remains one of the most important global economic risks as uncertainty continues over the Strait of Hormuz, a route that normally carries a major share of the world’s oil trade.

Although crude prices fell during the past week on speculation that shipping conditions could improve, actual oil flows through Hormuz remain well below pre-conflict levels. Reuters reports that Asian crude imports in August stayed weak, while exports through the strait remained severely constrained.

Iran is also facing growing economic pressure from war and intensified U.S. sanctions, with foreign trade falling sharply and domestic inflation reaching extremely high levels. Meanwhile, Tehran continues to insist that it retains control over the strategic waterway.

For the Philippines, the issue is important because the country depends heavily on imported energy. Any renewed rise in oil prices could quickly affect fuel, transportation, food distribution, inflation, the peso, and business operating costs.

The positive development is that oil prices ended the week lower, offering some potential relief if the decline is sustained. But the market remains highly sensitive to any deterioration in Middle East security.

Philippine Stock Market

The Philippine Stock Exchange is closed today because August 30 is a Sunday, so there is no new PSEi session to report.

The market will reopen on Monday with investors likely to continue watching oil prices, inflation, the peso, and the impact of the BSP’s recent rate increase. A sustained decline in global crude prices could provide some relief for Philippine equities by reducing inflation and import-cost concerns.
