🇵🇭 Philippine Markets Face Inflation and Peso Pressure

Philippine financial markets ended the week under pressure as investors confronted a difficult combination of high inflation, a weak peso, and elevated energy costs.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas now estimates August inflation at between 5.5% and 6.5%, well above its 2%–4% target range. Higher food prices and earlier increases in global oil costs are among the main drivers.

The PSEi closed at 5,956.33 on August 28, down 0.80%, while the peso weakened beyond ₱62 per U.S. dollar. The combination raises concerns for investors because a weaker currency makes imported fuel and goods more expensive, while persistent inflation may keep Philippine interest rates elevated for longer.

There is, however, a potential source of relief. Philippine fuel prices could fall by as much as ₱4 per liter next week as concerns over Middle East supply disruptions ease.

For businesses and households, the central question is whether lower oil prices can offset broader inflationary pressures before higher borrowing costs begin to weigh more heavily on economic growth.
