🇵🇭 PSEi Falls Below 6,000 as BSP Rate Hike and Peso Weakness Rattle Markets
Philippine Stock Market August 28, 2026: PSEi Falls Below 6,000. Philippine financial markets ended the week under heavy pressure after the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas raised its benchmark policy rate by 25 basis points to 5%, its third consecutive increase. The BSP said the move was intended to address persistent inflation risks, including volatile oil prices and possible food-price pressures from El Niño.
The PSEi fell 0.80% to 5,956.33 on August 28, breaking below the psychologically important 6,000 level. At the same time, the Philippine peso weakened to a record ₱62.265 per U.S. dollar, adding to concerns over inflation, foreign investment flows, and corporate costs.
For investors, the combination is significant. Higher interest rates can restrain borrowing and consumer spending, while a weaker peso makes imported fuel and other goods more expensive. The central question now is whether tighter monetary policy can stabilize inflation and the currency without further weakening economic growth.
