Recent days, YOLO was a buzz word: You Only Live Once. That is right. But, how we interpret its meaning depends on the individual. Majority of people don’t even perceive as an important word. Probably because they don’t have to think about it seriously as of now.
But, to a retiree, YOLO is quite a significant word. A typical retiree is over 50 years old and experiencing these symptoms: body functions are manily weakening, physical strength is fading, belly is bulging, hair become thinner and whiter, etc. What remains may be some money in the bank, grown-up kids, pension and insurance, and a tired body. Young people wouldn’t know and they will never know what the life of a retiree feels like.
One thing is certain: we all die and we don’t know when. So, living today like my last day seems logical. Then, we think, what if we live longer and further? Answering to that question, so may philosophers and wisemen already talked about it. So I don’t need to elaborate here, but, my principle is simple: I will live today as if I die tomorrow and I will plan to live a 100 years.
To be able to do that, I need a physical strength and good health. Without them, I cannot accomplish my objective: living a 100 years to the fullest. It may sounds like a Holier-than-Thou, but, as a retiree, I began to realize that my physical strength and health is the most important asset in my life. I want to live for a 100-year in good health and enjoy the rest of my life.
During the COVID era, I was running regularly. Simply because I didn’t have any other things to do. Playing a round of golf a week is not an exercise. It is just for fun. After COVID, I was not able to run much. Going to the office regularly and attending meetings here and there, meetinging people to eat and drink.. In that life, my belly began to bulge. I realized slowly that I became lazy and tired easily. So, I determined to resume running.

My running routine is 5 km for 32 minutes. I was running 5 km for 22 minutes when I was 40s. Closing to 60, I become weak and slow. It is a natural course of aging so, it is OK as long as I can run. Set a clear target is a very important thing in running. Without a set goal, you cannot accomplish the running. That is why runners always record their time.
Running requires discipline. You need to run at a set time and follow a planned course. No matter what heppens, you should beat the set time. I open my Q-Gis and select a route for a 5 km without any obstacles. Stopping during running is a killer. So, it is important to select a route which do not have any stopping points. Luckily, I found the route around my community.
I will wirte a separate article about running, but running is the best option for maintaining your health and physical strength. A 30 minutes a day. It will be the most challenging event in a day because, it is darn hard. Even 3 times a week is quite successful. Once a week is the very minimum, but you will not maintain running in your life if you only run once a week.
Running is a method to keep my retired life healthy and enjoyable. Without maintaining physical strength and good health, what meaningful events will I have during the rest of life? A death bed? Hell NO.
I will run at least three times a week. And I will enjoy my life until the Lord calls me.
